Notice : Elections of Chief, Deputy Chief and Councillors

NOTICE OF ELECTION 

NOTICE is hereby given to the electors of the Cree Nation of Nemaska that an election has been called for the following offices: 

• Chief
• Deputy Chief
• 5 Councillors

Nominations of an elector of the Cree Nation of Nemaska for the office of Chief, the office of Deputy Chief or the office of Councillor may be made by filing a written nomination paper with the Returning Officer before 5:00 p.m. on February 6, 2023. Nomination papers may be obtained from the Returning Officer and the Band Office Reception. 

A Nomination by an elector must be seconded by five electors and accepted in writing by the candidate in order to be valid. Nominations may be filed in person, by mail or by fax. 

An elector may nominate one candidate or second the nomination of one candidate for the office of Chief, the office of Deputy Chief and the office of Councillor. No one may propose or second the nomination of more than one candidate for any office. 

Where a vote is required, the Election Poll for the office of Chief, Deputy Chief and of Councillor will be held on February 27, 2023 between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. at the Recreation Hall. 

An Advance Poll for those electors who are unable to vote on the Election Day will be held on February 20, 2023 between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. at the Recreation Hall. 

A travelling poll will be held on both dates, February 20 and February 27, 2023, between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. at camps located on Nemaska territory along the James Bay Highway and the Route du Nord. 

Any elector who does not reside within the Category 1A lands of the Cree Nation of Nemaska must provide his or her current address to the Local Registry Officer. This information must be provided as soon as possible, and no later than February 15, 2023, if the non-resident elector wishes to vote by mail or by fax. Mail-in and fax ballot packages will be mailed to non-resident electors at the address currently on record the week of February 13, 2023, and no later than February 16, 2023.
